The Opportunity
Thinking back to the opening of IMS, it was impossible to know of the exponential growth of interest in meditation that would take place over the next five decades. It has been immensely gratifying to see IMS at the forefront of this engagement with the Buddha’s teachings of generosity, compassion, and wisdom.

The challenge we face
The growing interest in mindfulness and Buddhist practice has outpaced our capacity to welcome everyone who seeks retreat. The impact is real:
- We see the waitlists outpacing capacity each year—but we also know that so many practitioners have stopped trying to come to IMS. Waitlists have a cumulative impact.
- Lack of access impacts our ability to cultivate connection with newer practitioners and with emerging teachers—two communities who are essential to IMS’s mission and future.
- Underrepresented communities are most affected by limited access.
Together, we can:
- Welcome more people into practice while maintaining the intimate size of retreat containers.
- Extend scholarships and offer programs that meet people where they are.
- Grow a community that truly reflects the diversity of our world.
- Build a sustainable foundation now so IMS can serve generations to come.
As the Dharma unfolds in the West and we continue to train new teachers, it’s essential that they have opportunities to teach. Because of the limitations of IMS’s programming schedule, only a certain number of teachers can fit into our retreat calendar each year. A third center will really open up this possibility for new cohorts of teachers to get the teaching opportunities, encouragement, and support they need.”

- Goal: $40 million
- Already, $36 million has been pledged—bringing this vision within reach.
In a future Phase Two, we also plan to develop new staff housing on campus—ensuring that those who care for retreatants can live and work in conditions that reflect the values of IMS.
This is a moment of profound opportunity—together, we can create a place where the Dharma will flourish, and where many thousands more will find refuge, insight, and renewal.
